We are often told that it is important to stay informed. With so many choices these days, sometimes it can be a challenge to know where to go and how to tune into the right kind of news. Wondering where to begin? Here?s a look at my regular news sources:

Knowing what is happening in your community can help one make better pracitcal day-to-day decisions. Most people I know can identify at least one local newspaper and broadcast TV station, but I have found that only a special audience knows where to turn to for consistent business news. Anyone who is job hunting, involved in?entrepreneurship, sales, or any myriad of other reasons should be plugged into local business news.

When it comes to national and world news, the choices are virtually limitless. If you?re new to following the news, try to observe the different styles of reporting among different news organizations. My personal flavors include CNN, NPR, & the Wall Street Journal. CNN?s iPhone app includes a feature called ?My CNN,? which allows users to queue stories for hand-picked viewing at your leisure and the ability to easily monitor only the on-going stories one is interested in.

3 Doors Down guitarist Matt Roberts leaves band

ESCATAWPA, Miss. (AP) ? 3 Doors Down says on its website that founding member and guitarist Matt Roberts has left the rock band because of health problems.

The statement Wednesday says Roberts has problems with blood circulation and other health issues. It calls the split amicable.

Roberts grew up with bassist Todd Harrell and lead singer Brad Arnold in Mississippi. Together they formed the band in Escatawpa, Miss., in 1996.

Arnold says Roberts will be welcomed back if he's able to return.

Guitarist Chris Henderson and drummer Greg Upchuch will continue to tour.

Viola Davis to Raise Cash for RI School | The Rhode Show

Rhode Island native and award-winning actress Viola Davis is not only known for her skills on screen, but also for using her star power to lend a hand in her home state.

Over the weekend, Davis gave the commencement address at Providence College's graduation. On Wednesday, she will be taking time out of her busy schedule to help raise money for Community Preparatory School, an independent inner-city middle school in South Providence, at an event called "An Evening with Viola Davis."

The school itself is set up to challenge minority and low income children of Rhode Island to succeed in college preparatory high school programs and become community leaders.?

The school accepts students regardless of ability to pay.? Two out of three applicants are sometimes turned away due to space.?

90 percent of Community Prep students receive financial aid and more than $1 million in aid is awarded each year. The school also has many programs that will benefit from the fundraiser.?

They have before and after school programs in tutoring, music lessons, sports, creative arts, clubs, and field trips for the students.?

Viola was kind enough to make it her mission to speak at the event. Viola grew up in Central Falls and understands the struggles that many inner city kids face.?

The event will take place on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at The Squantum Association in East Providence.

Speak & Deliver - A Public Speaking Blog For the Speaking Public: If ...

I recently had a speech contestant ask me if I'd watch his speech at the contest that night and give him some feedback. Always happy to do that - it's my job, but also a passion to help other speakers when I can.

I emailed him some basic thoughts, and asked if he'd send me his script so I could help him work through some ?kinks in the speech. His reply? "I haven't written it down." My jaw quickly collided with my keyboard.

On one hand, it's somewhat impressive that he got as far as he did without a script (District Level). On the other, I can't help but wonder how much farther he would have progressed if he'd been willing to put his speech to paper, or at least to an electronic document. Why put yourself in the position of giving what amounts to a rehearsed impromptu speech time after time? Why put your audience in position of having to listen to it, for that matter?

I've written before on the benefits of writing your speech - but maybe it takes focusing on 3 Points of Pain to get my point across:

1. Sloppy Stories - you may have the perfect story in mind, but your mind has a way of adding fluff and diverting your train of thought mid-sentence if you have sharpened your story in writing. Don't risk wasting words on an aspect your story that doesn't matter. If you're talking about recovering from a head injury after a car wreck, for example, we probably don't need you to go into the details about how you financed the car when you bought it.

2. Train Wreck Transitions - you've memorized the order of your stories or point chunks, kudos to you. But if you aren't smoothly going from one point to the next, your audience gets mentally thrown around as they try to follow you from point to point. You can end up leaving them at the last town and, by the end, wondering how you got from the station to the final destination. Transitions are one of the few parts of a speech I recommend memorizing, if possible. It'll save your listeners from mental bumps and bruises, and possibly save you from getting derailed entirely.

3. Clumsy Closes - nothing ruins a great speech like a lousy close. People finish with the meat of their speech and then just seem to hit the eject button. They may be out of time, out of energy, or simply out of ideas - and they end up leaving their audience out in the cold. No matter how exciting, funny, and/or insightful the journey has been, if you don't bring them to a moment of closure, your message will be lost. I admit, finding your close is difficult - I do a wonderful job finding closes for others, but often call in help on my own.

The Bottom Line: If you don't write it - you won't be able to consistently improve upon it or even remember to say it from presentation to presentation. I'm not saying you have to memorize everything word for word, that you need to read your notes, or that you have to be perfect. In fact, I'm a big proponent of the trigger method of using notes in a longer presentation. But if you don't have something to reference as you prepare, something to build upon other than merely the ethereal and ever changing mental images in your head, you're limiting your audience's experience, and your own ability to Speak....and Deliver.

CANNES, France (AP) ? The first half of the 65th annual Cannes Film Festival has completed a life cycle in films that range from the motivating spark of child birth to the despair of slow death in old age.

The latter came by way of Michael Haneke's "Amour," which is by wide consensus the favorite thus far for the festival's top honor, the Palme d'Or. Such an outcome would make the Austrian filmmaker, who won three years ago for his previous film, "The White Ribbon," the seventh director to win two Palmes.

Cannes audiences sit down for a movie with expectations of nothing less than a masterpiece, and "Amour" has been the only film generally considered worthy of that label. Masterly austere, it's a simple and direct story of a French couple in their 80s, played by Emmanuelle Riva as Anne, and Jean-Louis Trintignant as Georges ? both French acting greats in thrillingly good late performances.

Early in the film, they return home from a concert to find signs of an attempted break in. No one has entered the apartment, but something worse, something more destructive seems to have been let in. The next morning during breakfast, Anne freezes, staring vacantly. It's the first sign of an irrevocable decline, to be followed by doctor visits, a dementia-inducing stroke, and the mounting indignities of dying while Georges cares for her.

For Haneke, a provocateur of mysterious terrors, it's a film of exceptional intimacy, where death slowly disassembles love.

Though "Amour" ? solemn and deadly ? is the kind of serious stuff Cannes most celebrates, the festival also loves a crowd-pleaser, even if it doesn't confer quite the same respect on them. (Descriptions of "slight" are a death knell on the Croisette.) "The Artist" premiered at Cannes last year, when Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life" took the Palme.

In the first six days of the festival, nothing was as purely pleasurable as Ken Loach's whiskey-heist comedy "The Angel's Share." It played for critics Monday night ahead of its Tuesday premiere, and was warmly welcomed as a genial reprieve after two days of dismal rain along the French Riviera.

It's a rare comedy from Loach, whose social realism has made him a staple in Cannes (a record 11 times in competition) and a Palme d'Or winner for 2006's "The Wind That Shakes the Barley." ''The Angel's Share" stars first-time actor Paul Brannigan as Robbie, a young troublemaker in Glasgow, Scotland, who narrowly escapes a jail sentence. A father to be, he's trying to make something of himself while old rivalries continue to tempt him to violence.

A community service sponsor (John Henshaw) leads Robbie to an interest in whiskey, which figures into an unlikely liquor heist. It's a snappy blue-collar comedy (the Scottish dialogue was judged so thick that English subtitles were played with the film) with a wry commentary on the narrow opportunities for young people trying to start a family in a bleak economy.

There have, of course, been many other festival highlights, including Jacques Audiard's "Rust and Bone," a tale of love and animal instinct that has drawn raves for Marion Cotillard. Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," opened the festival with a meticulous and melancholy ode to young love. The Danish drama "The Hunt" by Thomas Vinterberg ("Festen") impressed many in its story of runaway gossip.

Cannes finishes Sunday with the Palme d'Or selection from the jury headed by Nanni Moretti. Still to come: David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis," Walter Salles' "On the Road," Lee Daniels' "The Paperboy," Jeff Nichols' "Mud" and Carlos Reygadas' "Post Tenebras Lux." On Tuesday, Andrew Dominick's thriller "Killing Them Softly," starring Brad Pitt, was to premiere.

'Avengers' sinks 'Battleship' at box office

Superhero movie "The Avengers" topped U.S. and Canadian box office charts for a third straight weekend with $55.1 million, sending action movie "Battleship" into second place and toppling comedy "The Dictator," according to studio estimates on Sunday.

"Avengers," from Walt Disney Co's Marvel Studios, has amassed more than $457 million in domestic ticket sales since its debut earlier this month and another $723 million internationally for a worldwide total of $1.18 billion, according to Disney.

"Battleship," which had high hopes of becoming a summer blockbuster in the U.S. and Canada, could muster only $25.3 million this weekend in the face of the "Avengers" juggernaut.

Sacha Baron Cohen's satirical comedy "The Dictator," which has been heavily promoted in advance of its debut, finished in third place for the weekend with $17.4 million. Since its debut last Wednesday, it has taken in a total of $24.5 million in domestic - U.S. and Canadian - ticket sales.

"Battleship" was launched by Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast Corp. Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures distributed "The Dictator."
