Matchtech awards Cambridge University Eco Racing team winner of the Engineering Showcase 2013

Judges of the competition included editor of The Engineer, Jon Excell, Chief Executive of EngineeringUK, Paul Jackson, and MD of Matchtech, Keith Lewis. ?

Entries which made the Highly Commended shortlist were Houlder with its ?Fast Track? reel skidding and drive system, alongside Sheffield University with its student entry, ?Robot Swarm?.

MD of Matchtech Keith Lewis said, ?I am extremely pleased to announce that the winning entry was the Cambridge University Eco Racing (CUER) car. The team has taken a bold move by taking a fundamentally different approach to solar car design that focussed on aerodynamics rather than maximising surface area, which is a great demonstration of innovation.

?As with all our shortlisted entries, the winning project is undoubtedly inspiring, demonstrating how much scope there is within the field of engineering with new techniques and designs yet to be discovered. This opportunity is placed in the hands of the next generation and by putting the spotlight on engineering talent such as this, I hope we have encouraged future engineers to pursue careers in this field, whilst sufficiently celebrating the achievements happening within our UK industry today.?

Paul Jackson, Chief Executive of EngineeringUK and judging panel member said of the importance of initiatives such as the Engineering Showcase to the future of the engineering industry in the UK, ?I hope great projects like these will not just help to raise the ambitions of those already pursuing engineering careers, but will inspire young people just starting to think about their future career. Ensuring our future engineering talent-pipeline must start in schools. We must be aiming to double the number of young people studying GCSE physics as part of triple sciences and grow the number of students studying physics A level to match those studying maths.?

The Cambridge University Eco Racing (CUER) team, entered the competition with an aerodynamic eco car designed to race in a 3000km solar marathon across the Australian Outback. Jon Excell, editor of The Engineer said of the winning project, ?I chose this as the winning project because I felt it met the judging criteria (innovation, impact, cost-effectiveness and resourcefulness) more convincingly than the other two entries, and offers the clearest explanation of how the project meets these criteria. The way in which a student team has tapped into industry funding and support is a strong example of both resourcefulness and cost effectiveness.?

Kane?s injury keeps him out of Money in the Bank

Money in the Bank All-Stars

After days of speculation, it?s now official. The Big Red Monster Kane will not compete in this Sunday?s Money in the Bank All-Stars Match, according to WWE.com sources.

Kane was injured in a brutal assault by The Wyatt Family on Raw, leaving the veteran with head and neck trauma.

Watch The Wyatts viciously pummel Kane

Kane?s absence leaves a hole in perhaps the highest stakes match of the year. Will another Superstar get the opportunity to compete? As of Friday, WWE.com was unable to find out if a replacement will be named, but here are some potential Superstars who might be able to fill the void.

The Great KhaliThe Great Khali
The 347-pound former World Heavyweight Champion would certainly be a formidable force to be reckoned with in the All-Stars Match. Although the giant can boast many accomplishments in his career, the WWE Title has eluded him. A win this Sunday would instantly bring such an opportunity within his massive grasp.

Big Show
Big Show

Where has The World?s Largest Athlete been as of late? With his ?ironclad contract,? he said in a?recent interview he could take time off whenever he pleases. Could he decide to make a return at Money in the Bank?

Kofi KingstonKofi Kingston
The high-flying Kofi Kingston is currently out of action and recuperating following?elbow surgery in June. Could he surprise everyone and return sooner than expected?

WWE Legend
Could Raw General Manager Brad Maddox look to make an impact in his new role as early as this WWE LegendsSunday? If so, there?d be nothing bigger than naming a replacement for Kane. Perhaps instead of a current Superstar, he?d make a huge splash by adding a?WWE Legend to the All-Stars Match?

No one
The Big Red Machine has huge shoes to fill. It?s certainly possible that no Superstar will be called into action to take his place in the Money in the Bank All-Stars Match. If that?s the case, it?s one fewer formidable force for the other combatants to have to deal with.

Who will ascend the ladder and claim the coveted WWE Championship opportunity? To find out, tune in to Money in the Bank this Sunday, with coverage starting during the free?Kickoff Match at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT.

Rights officials in Russia go to meet Snowden

MOSCOW (AP) ? About a dozen Russian human rights activists, lawyers and political figures were ushered into a section of Moscow's Sheremetyevo international airport on Friday to meet with Edward Snowden, the leaker of U.S. National Security Agency secrets.

Snowden is believed to have been stuck in the airport's transit zone since arriving from Hong Kong on June 23, as he negotiates for asylum in another country.

The activists included Sergei Nikitin, head of Amnesty International's Russia office, and Tatiana Lokshina, deputy head of the Russian office of Human Rights Watch. Also taken into the meeting room were Russia's presidential human rights ombudsman Vladimir Lukin, prominent attorney Genri Reznik, and Vyacheslav Nikonov, head of the Russian parliament's education committee.

They came after an email in Snowden's name was sent on Thursday. On Facebook, Lokshina posted the text of the email, which says in part that Snowden wants to make "a brief statement and discussion regarding the next steps forward in my situation."

Hundreds of journalists flocked to the airport, but were kept in a hallway outside the meeting area which is behind a gray door marked "staff only." It was not clear if Snowden would have to come out that door or if he could exit by another route.

The text of the invitation does not directly address the offers of asylum that Snowden has received from Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua, though it expresses gratitude for asylum offers and says "I hope to travel to each of them." It accuses the United States of "an unlawful campaign ... to deny my right to seek and enjoy this asylum."

Reznik said before the meeting that he expected Snowden called for it in order to seek asylum in Russia.

Snowden made an earlier application for Russian asylum. But Russian President Vladimir Putin said asylum would be conditional on Snowden stopping leaking U.S. secrets; Snowden then withdrew his asylum bid, Russian officials said.

How much the human rights organizations could influence a Russian asylum bid or other aspects of Snowden's dilemma is unclear. Putin takes a dim view of non-governmental organizations' involvement in political matters.

But an appeal by Snowden to internationally respected groups could boost his status and give Russia a pretext for reconsidering asylum.

Snowden has not been seen in public since arriving in Moscow from Hong Kong, where he had fled before his leaks about American Internet surveillance were made public. Russia has said it cannot extradite him because by remaining in the transit zone he is technically outside Russian territory.

Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia have said they would be willing to grant asylum to Snowden. But it is unclear if Snowden could fly from Moscow to any of those countries without passing through the airspace of the United States or allied countries.

Was Deposed Egyptian President Morsi Sabotaged?

Was Deposed Egyptian President Morsi Sabotaged?

Posted on Jul?11,?2013

A week after the Egyptian military removed President Mohamed Morsi from power, police are back on the streets, there?s no longer a shortage of fuel and the power is consistently on, all of which have raised questions among his supporters over whether Morsi?s opponents conspired against him while he was in office.

?This was preparing for the coup,? said Naser el-Farash, the spokesman for the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade during Morsi?s tenure. ?Different circles in the state, from the storage facilities to the cars that transport petrol products to the gas stations, all participated in creating the crisis.?

The New York Times:

The apparently miraculous end to the crippling energy shortages, and the re-emergence of the police, seems to show that the legions of personnel left in place after former President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in 2011 played a significant role ? intentionally or not ? in undermining the overall quality of life under the Islamist administration of Mr. Morsi.

...Working behind the scenes, members of the old establishment, some of them close to Mr. Mubarak and the country?s top generals, also helped finance, advise and organize those determined to topple the Islamist leadership, including Naguib Sawiris, a billionaire and an outspoken foe of the Brotherhood; Tahani el-Gebali, a former judge on the Supreme Constitutional Court who is close to the ruling generals; and Shawki al-Sayed, a legal adviser to Ahmed Shafik, Mr. Mubarak?s last prime minister, who lost the presidential race to Mr. Morsi.

But it is the police returning to the streets that offers the most blatant sign that the institutions once loyal to Mr. Mubarak held back while Mr. Morsi was in power. Throughout his one-year tenure, Mr. Morsi struggled to appease the police, even alienating his own supporters rather than trying to overhaul the Interior Ministry. But as crime increased and traffic clogged roads ? undermining not only the quality of life, but the economy ? the police refused to deploy fully.

Until now.
