We are often told that it is important to stay informed. With so many choices these days, sometimes it can be a challenge to know where to go and how to tune into the right kind of news. Wondering where to begin? Here?s a look at my regular news sources:
Knowing what is happening in your community can help one make better pracitcal day-to-day decisions. Most people I know can identify at least one local newspaper and broadcast TV station, but I have found that only a special audience knows where to turn to for consistent business news. Anyone who is job hunting, involved in?entrepreneurship, sales, or any myriad of other reasons should be plugged into local business news.
American City Business Journals is a news organization dedicated business news. North Carolina is served by the Charlotte Business Journal, Triad Business Journal, and the Triangle Business Journal.
Features include:
In addition, these journals usually have additional types of email newsletters to keep you informed ? at your pace. Choose from Industry Watch (topic-based newsletters), Morning Call (top headlines?delivered?to your inbox in the early AM), or even a custom newsletter based on companies you wish to follow. And there?s even an app for smartphones!

When it comes to national and world news, the choices are virtually limitless. If you?re new to following the news, try to observe the different styles of reporting among different news organizations. My personal flavors include CNN, NPR, & the Wall Street Journal. CNN?s iPhone app includes a feature called ?My CNN,? which allows users to queue stories for hand-picked viewing at your leisure and the ability to easily monitor only the on-going stories one is interested in.
Sources for Communications, PR, & Marketing News
Here are my favorite sources for industry-specific news:
All Things D from WSJ:??AllThingsD.com is a Web site devoted to news, analysis and opinion on technology, the Internet and media. But it is different from other sites in this space. It is a fusion of different media styles, different topics, different formats and different sources.
Because the site is wholly owned by Dow Jones, publisher of The Wall Street Journal, we aim to adhere to the journalistic standards of the best of the mainstream media. But, because it is run autonomously as a small online start-up, we aim to exhibit the fresh thinking and nimbleness of the best of the new media. We want to be first, and sassy, but also well sourced and accurate. We will offer lots of opinion and analysis, but plenty of fact as well.?

Nieman Journalism Lab: affiliated with Harvard University, NJL provides a scholarly reflection at the week?s media world. I subscribe to the weekly digest.
