Green Blog: A Discovery, Marooned in Libya's Revolution

As Adam Nagourney reports in The Times, Death Valley is experiencing a burst of civic pride over reclaiming a world temperature record: a 134-degree reading registered on July 10, 1913, at Greenland Ranch in California.

The World Meteorological Organization announced in September that it was throwing out what had previously been thought to be the global record: a reading of 136.4 degrees recorded in the Libyan settlement of Al Aziziya on Sept. 13, 1922. The revised record made headlines around the world.

Yet the back story is even more interesting. Khalid el-Fadli, a Libyan member of the meteorological team that investigated the record, found the original 1922 temperature reading in a logbook at the Libyan National Meteorological Center, where he works, on Feb. 15, 2011, when a revolution had just broken out in the capital.

Working from the logbook, the international team would eventually discover that the reading was taken by an untrained observer with an instrument that was outmoded even for its time. What is more, the temperature did not jibe with other temperatures measured in the area on Sept. 13, 1922, and it differed markedly from readings taken later at Azizia.

Yet it took it took the team six months to pursue those findings, given that Mr. Fadli got sucked into a war immediately after reporting the discovery of the notebook. ?During the revolution, it was very dangerous to call anyone outside,? he said in a telephone interview from Tripoli, the Libyan capital. And ?international calls were shut down by the government? in any case, he said.

Mr. Fadli recalled: ?From March until July, I would go to my office ? not regularly, not every day. Because there was no fuel, our life was very hard.?

He recalls reading the e-mails flooding in from international colleagues, at first curious in tone and then deeply concerned as weeks passed by. For a full six months he resisted the urge to reply lest he be accused of corresponding with the enemy.

Given the level of government monitoring, any knowledge that he was communicating with an international committee ?would have been a death sentence for him,? said Chris Burt, a member of the international meteorological team.

Then came a television pronouncement by Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, Libya?s longtime dictator, that NATO was using climate data relayed from Libyan scientists to plot its aerial attacks on Libyan government forces. The scientists on the meteorological team assumed the worst. ?My fear was that they had found out that el-Fadli was part of this committee,? Mr. Burt said.

But Mr. Fadli remained below the radar, and when the violence tapered off that August, he resumed communications with his distant colleagues, and together,?they were able to move on with their work.

and reported the discovery of the logbook.

He continues to work at the Libyan National Meteorological Center. ?It?s not completely normal yet,? Mr. Fadli said of his country?s situation. But a semblance of calm has returned, he added.

His international colleagues remain grateful. ?The records he found were really the smoking gun,? Mr. Burt said. ??He?s really ?the guy? in this investigation ? it never could have happened without him.?

Retired ... but my 401(K) still with last employer...

Hi All ~ I'm brand new to earlyretirement.org. Retired 1 yr ago @ age 62. Hoping to get advice/opinions. I'll try to be brief. My 401K ($190,000) is still with my employer---Why? Because I've got to find a financial advisor I can trust and whose fees won't cost me more than the return on my investment. Plus, investing is not my forte, so I need to trust whomever/wherever I leave my hard-earned money to treat me like a daughter! Sometimes I wonder if I'm better off just laddering the $ in CDs. However, I believe I can do better. In addition to the $190,000 in the 401K, I have about $235K in a couple of CDs and savings (I "chase" the highest interest rates), and $12K in savings bonds (don't mature until 2022 or thereabouts). I currently rent an apt. for $800/month (I'm fortunate). My pension and social security (SS starts in Feb) net about $3,140/month. Oh ya, and I may need to move from my apt, and would like to buy a small house.......................................
Thank you,
Suzi

It is advisable, and easy enough to roll the 401k over to your own IRA in anyone of the reputable mutual fund companies like Vanguard, Fidelity, T Rowe Price etc, where you can choose from a wide variety of mutual funds ( index fund, all in one fund retirement fund, balanced fund, asset allocation fund, pure equity or bond funds). While the company will generally not act as a direct financial adviser and pick the fund for you, they can point you to the general area where you can do your research and pick the funds that suit your investment objectives and risk tolerance level. There are fund screening tool on many of the company's website as well. I am not sure you need to wait until you find a financial adviser first and they don't necessarily do better than a reasonably well diversified mutual fund portfolio anyway. Those companies can also help you find an independent financial adviser as well, general a one time session for a fee, and I can tell you from experience that it was not very helpful. I only did it because it was free in my case, but if you feel that you do not have much experience and want to have someone look through your WHOLE financial situation, it may be worth it for you.

i am turning 62 in feb. I had an old401k from a former employer. I moved it to trowe price 2020 fund. it's easy. just go on line to troweprice to get primary info.
then call their toll free phone number and with some info can get it into an IRA=works just like 401k but you have control.

Ditto against a financial adviser. $$ down the drain, in this instance.

Wherever you choose to transfer the funds will handle it, and should be no charge.

We chose Vanguard for inexpensive index funds. They wre extremely helpful and charged no fees.

Interesting ... I understand from a very reputable financial advisor (via a radio money show here in MA) that one should not keep 401K funds with a former employer. Reason why is that if that former employer should 'go bust', your 401K funds could be held up during bankruptcy proceedings .... sometimes for very long periods of time, i.e. 4 years! That's what has made me a bit nervous about keeping my funds there ... I recognize that this is a personal decision, based upon one's confidence in his/her former employer's status. Thanks again!

George Mason vs. South Florida final score: Patriots come up short against Bulls, lose 61-57

Despite 24 points from Sherrod Wright, George Mason was unable to get the win over South Florida.

The George Mason Patriots upset bid over the South Florida Bulls came up short, as they fell 61-57 on Saturday night. Guard Sherrod Wright led the Patriots in scoring with 24 points, but it was not enough to lead them to victory.

Outside of Wright, the George Mason offense struggled mightily. The Patriots shot just 36.7 percent from the field, and an even worse 2-of-15 from beyond the three-point line. Wright was also the only George Mason player to score in double-digits.

George Mason's defense held South Florida in check for most of the game, but they allowed the Bulls to make 7-of-17 three-point shots, which was the difference in the game.

The start of the second half is when the game got away from George Mason, as South Florida went on a 10-0 run within the first five minutes to build a 10-point lead. That cushion allowed South Florida to stay ahead the rest of the way.

George Mason chipped away and did make it a two-point game with 33 seconds left, but South Florida was able to make all six of their free throw attempts to hold off the Patriots comeback attempt.

Nogales Mayor helps less fortunate community members during the holidays

It was a season of giving for this Southern Arizona politician, as Mayor Arturo Garino provided almost 200 Thanksgiving dinners for less fortunate families in Santa Cruz County and over 100 blankets to elderly members of the community during the holidays.

?It was a great privilege to assist some of the less fortunate families in our community. This helped brighten their holidays and warm our hearts,? said Mayor Garino, in a recent news release.

Mayor Garino?s annual Thanksgiving dinner drive was also a huge success. After receiving several generous contributions, the Mayor was able to provide turkeys and dinner fixings for 160 children and their families at the City Recreation Center on November 20. Local schools were asked to provide names of students whose families might not be having a proper Thanksgiving dinner. The lists were cross-referenced and families were then notified of the assigned pick up date and time.

Due to the generosity of donations, Mayor Garino was also able to provide some 19 turkeys to the Nogales Crossroads Mission Annual Thanksgiving dinner, as well as providing 12 turkeys, pumpkin pies, and dinner rolls to the Nogales Santa Cruz Council on Aging, and providing additional Thanksgiving dinner fixings to the Casitas Santa Cruz.

Mayor Garino then attended the Thanksgiving luncheon at the Santa Cruz Council on Aging and the Casitas Santa Cruz Thanksgiving dinner, after being graciously invited to join the meal. ?I love attending these types of events,? said Mayor Garino in the same release. ??Seeing members of our community enjoying Thanksgiving, makes me all the more grateful for everyone that helped make this possible.?

Not long after the Thanksgiving holiday, Mayor Garino, began his annual Blanket Drive, where he purchases and donates blankets to elderly members of the community all before the Christmas holiday.

Over 100 blankets were purchased and distributed by the Mayor and his office on December 21. Different organizations, such as the Nogales Housing Authority, were contacted and asked to provide addresses of less fortunate, elderly tenants who might need a new blanket.

Once the lists were provided, the Mayor drove to each person?s home and personally handed them their blanket and wished them a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. All recipients were very happy to see the Mayor standing at their door with different blankets asking them to choose their favorite one.

All of the recipients thanked him for the generous gesture and for his good work, while others also told him what their plans for Christmas and New Years were. One house in particular made the experience even more worthwhile for the Mayor

When the elderly woman opened her door and the Mayor explained the reason for his visit, asking her to choose which blanket she preferred, the woman immediately chose a green blanket and told Mayor Garino a heart wrenching story about how her mother passed away two years before and the last thing she purchased her mother, a couple of hours before her death, was a green blanket, which she never saw again.

With tears in her eyes, she told the Mayor that this year had been especially hard for her and seeing him standing at her door, with a green blanket identical to the one she had purchased for her mother had made the holidays more bearable and reassured her that her mother was still with her somehow.

?Hearing stories like these and being able to help somehow make my Holidays a whole lot brighter.? said Mayor Garino. ?And I can?t wait for the new year to begin, so that I can continue helping the community.?

For questions or inquiries, or if you would like to donate towards next year?s Thanksgiving Dinner Drive or Christmas Blanket Drive please contact the Mayor?s executive assistant, Diana Cruz, at (520) 285-5602.

Tory support soars amongst gay voters - Marilyn Stowe Blog

Support for the Conservative Party has almost tripled amongst the gay, lesbian and bisexual voters, according to a new survey by Pink News.

Support for the Tories has increased from 11 to 30 per cent since the last general election, the site reports, while Prime Minister David Cameron is now preferred by 47 per cent of gay voters, thanks to his plans to legalise gay marriage. Only 42 per cent of gay and lesbian respondents said they preferred Labour leader Ed Miliband.

A decisive 64 per cent of the survey participants said the Coalition government?s plans to legalise same sex marriage had improved their view of the Conservative Party ? 48 per cent said a little and 16 per cent said a lot.

Nevertheless, the majority of the survey participants still support Labour: 38 per cent, compared to 30 per cent for the Conservatives. Thirteen per cent said the supported the Liberal Democrats.

Pink News publisher Benjamin Cohen said: ?By proposing same-sex marriage, David Cameron has unquestionably improved the standing of the Conservative Party among the gay community. However, what?s most interesting is that he is considerably more popular than his party within our community. This perhaps reflects the fact that many of the most vocal opponents of introducing this final act of equality for gay people have been Conservative MPs, some of whom represent and have angered the very people who voted in the poll.?

Meanwhile, High Court judge Mr Justice Coleridge has criticised the government?s gay marriage plans, saying they should be concentrating instead on marriage breakdown.

Speaking to the Times earlier this week, the judge said:

?So much energy and time has been put into this debate for 0.1 per cent of the population, when we have a crisis of family breakdown. While it is gratifying that marriage in any context is centre stage? but it [gay marriage] is a minority issue. We need? a more focused position by the government on the importance of marriage.?

Earlier this year Mr Justice Coleridge set up the Marriage Foundation to campaign for long term relationships within marriage.

Asian stocks up ahead of US 'fiscal cliff' talks

(AP) ? Asian stock markets rose Friday, hours before President Barack Obama and key lawmakers were to meet at the White House to try to hammer out an 11th-hour budget compromise to avert the so-called fiscal cliff.

Lawmakers have until Monday night to reach a deal before hundreds of billions of dollars in automatic tax increases and deep cuts to government spending kick in. Such a drastic reshuffling of money could throw the U.S. into another recession, economists have warned.

However, failure to avoid the fiscal cliff doesn't necessarily mean tax increases and spending cuts would become permanent, since the new Congress could pass legislation canceling them retroactively after it begins its work next year.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index marched higher, hitting its highest level since March 20, 2011. The Tokyo benchmark rose 1 percent to 10,428.36. Export shares posted big gains as the country's currency continued to recoil against the dollar. Mazda Motor Corp. jumped 4.2 percent and Isuzu Motors Ltd. surged 4.3 percent. Nintendo Co. advanced 3.4 percent.

Investors have been cheering newly named Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his calls for more public works spending to reinvigorate the economy. He also wants the Bank of Japan to raise its inflation target from 1 to 2 percent to drag the country out of two decades of deflation, or steadily declining prices that have deadened economic activity.

But Francis Lun, managing director of Lyncean Holdings in Hong Kong, said he was skeptical that the new government's roadmap would prove effective in the long run.

"He will increase the deficit, print more money and try to spend out of the recession. If you print or borrow money, you give the economy a sense of false hope," he said. "It's like taking opium. You feel good but eventually you have to come down."

Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose less than 0.1 percent to 22,637.91, while South Korea's Kospi added 0.6 percent to 1,999. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.5 percent to 4,671.30.

"The fiscal cliff seems to have lost its negative influence on global markets," said Lun. "Even if it falls into the fiscal cliff, you will only reduce the deficit by about $100 billion. In Chinese terms, it's like trying to douse a fire with a cup of water. They should do what Europe has done and try to impose austerity."

Markets got some lift from optimistic data out of the U.S. on Thursday and a statement from the German finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, who said in an interview that the worst of the debt crisis in the 17 European Union countries that use the euro appears to be over.

In the U.S., the average number of people seeking unemployment benefits over the past month fell to the lowest level since March 2008, a sign that the job market is healing.

Worries over U.S. budget negotiations sent Wall Street slightly lower on Thursday. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.1 percent to 13,096.31. The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 0.1 percent to 1,418.10, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 0.1 percent to 2,985.91.

Benchmark oil for February delivery rose 41 cents to $91.28 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 11 cents to finish at $90.87 per barrel.

In currencies, the euro fell slightly to $1.3239 from $1.3240 late Thursday in New York. The dollar gained to 86.45 yen from 86.02 yen.

Less Than 1 In 10 Americans Sleep Naked, Survey Finds

Americans are a bunch of prudes when they go to bed, according to a new study.

Less than one in 10, or eight percent, of Americans sleep naked, according to a poll of 3,700 people by linen and home d?cor company Anna's Linens. Reportedly, 74 percent of Americans wear pajamas to bed, and the rest wear "something else," according to the company, which is based in Costa Mesa, Calif.

Sadly, 65 percent said they get a "restful night's sleep" only three nights or less per week, and 47 percent said they share a bed with someone who snores. 74 percent of respondents said they sleep on their side, which leaves 16 percent who sleep on their stomachs, and 10 percent who sleep on their backs.

The company also found that many people don't remember their dreams. More than half of the respondents said they could recall less than a quarter of their dreams, while about 10 percent said they remembered nearly all their dreams from the previous night's sleep.

As for the nature of the dreams, nearly 70 percent felt their dreams were not as "interesting" as their friends' dreams. However, another 44 percent said their dreams were "more bizarre'' than their friends'.

And why, you ask, did a linen company conduct this poll? Here's a clue, from the CEO, Alan Gladstone.

"We were surprised eight percent of our respondents admitted to sleeping naked. For that group, we suggest our 100 percent Egyptian cotton sheets," Gladstone said. "They feel great against the skin."

However, there is one upside to the masses sleeping clothed. According to Travelodge, the incidence of naked sleepwalking, which occurs almost exclusively among its male guests, has increased sevenfold in the past year.

NTI Backup Now 5.5 Advanced Edition

NTI Backup Now is a survivor in the local backup market. It's been around for a long time, but it can perform impressively up-to-date tasks like continuously backing up document and image files as soon as you create or modify them?even when the backup app doesn't appear to be running. When it performs traditional backup tasks, it does them in a reliable and easy-to-understand way. I would happily trust my data to it if more up-to-date programs weren't also available.

NTI's closest rival is probably Genie Backup Manager Home, which has a more up-to-date interface and a better set of convenience options, but NTI Backup Now stands out by combining conventional backups with its continuous-backup feature. (Genie offers a comparable feature in a single-purpose app called Genie Timeline Home?not yet tested?instead of combining it with the conventional backup features of Genie Backup Manager Home).

One thing to keep in mind when choosing a backup app is that NTI Backup and Genie Backup Manager Home are consumer-level products that lag behind powerhouse backup apps like Acronis Backup and Recovery and Paragon Backup & Recovery Home in one especially important way: neither of these consumer-level products can create emergency boot media on a flash drive, only on optical discs that may be useless if your up-to-date Ultrabook lacks an optical drive.

Getting Started
I tested NTI Backup Now 5.5 Advanced Edition, which ranks as "advanced" because it creates image backups of complete drives and includes the continuous-backup feature. The standard edition lacks these two features. Don't look to the help file for information on multiple versions, because the help file refers to other versions that no longer exist, such as the shadowy-sounding "Shadow Edition." The help file also has a curious sentence touting the app's use of the "32-bit power of Windows 2000/XP/Vista"?as if 64-bit Windows and Windows 7 had never existed. Don't worry much about the outdated help file; I tested NTI Backup Now with no problems under 64-bit Windows 7.

Installation runs smoothly, but you may want to turn off the options to install two optional components: a CD-label maker program and a drive tester. When I burn CDs I prefer a Sharpie pen to label-making software, and NTI's drive tester was worse than useless on my system because it failed with an error message when I tried to test my boot partitions, apparently because of permissions problems with modern Windows setups. A less-than-knowledgeable user could easily panic when seeing those error messages. The installer prompts you to reboot before running the program.

Performance
The app performed speedily and reliably on all backup tasks that I tried, for example, taking two minutes 15 seconds to back up an 800 MB folder to a USB3 drive, slower than Acronis Backup & Recovery but faster than other backup software that I tested. What impressed me most was the app's ability to create continuous backups of document types. So, for example, I could specify a folder on my disk (it defaults to the Documents folder) and tell the app to backup any document or media file that gets written to that folder. After launching the backup and exiting the program, hey presto?any document or media file that I created or modified got backed up automatically. An option setting in the app let me decided whether to save all versions of a file, a limited number of versions, or only the latest version.

Interface and Operation
I wasn't impressed with NTI Backup's interface, which doesn't look like anything you're familiar with. Instead of a wizard interface with big arrows or Next buttons to guide you along. You have to look at a button bar labeled "EasySteps" with a column of metallic-looking buttons labeled 1, 2, 3, and Start. To get from the first dialog to the second you must mouse over to the button column and click 2. The technology seems more suited to an elevator than an application.

Step 1 lets you decide what to back up?either continuous backups of specific file types, or traditional backups of specific files or folders or of whole drives. An option in a file-based backup lets you backup your "profile," which means the contents of your desktop, your IE Favorites, or your Windows fonts?a distinctly strange selection of items. If you want to back up your Documents or Music folders, you'll need to pick them out of a directory tree. If you choose to back up a whole drive, prepare to scratch your head over a tree-structured diagram of your drives and partitions that's so badly designed that I had to study it closely to make sure I was picking out the drive I wanted.

Step 2 lets you choose a destination for your backup, which must be on a local drive, a writable optical disk, or a network drive. Step 3 lets you decide between a full or incremental backup. After you've created a job, you can run it or edit it from a tree-structured Job Management menu where you can run, delete, or modify an existing job.

NTI Backup's list of supplementary tools includes that optional CD labeler and drive tester, and a low-value directory-comparison tool that produces a plain text file listing all the files in two directories, with notes on whether or not they match. A file-manager-style tool would be far more useful.

NTI Backup Now isn't my first choice in today's backup market?that honor goes to backup Editors' Choice Acronis Backup and Recovery?but if you want a single package that combines continuous and standard backups, NTI may be your best choice. As with all the backup apps that I've tested, you can download and try it before you commit your data to it.

The Star's editorial | Banking on the Land Bank to curb blight ...

Vacant, nuisance properties have become Kansas City?s latter-day plague, a kind of urban gangrene that can create a chronic downdraft in property values. In neighborhoods where the problem is severe, vacant houses draw rats, squatters, drug dealers, vandals and midnight dumpers.

It?s a long-term problem, one that can only be eased with a long-term fix built into the workings of local government. So far, the city has had, at best, only mixed success in dealing with the problem. A receivership ordinance approved a couple of years ago has had little effect so far. But a new agency made possible in 2012 offers hope of progress.Authorized by a state law enacted during the summer, the city has created a Land Bank that began formal operations recently with adoption of bylaws. City officials and the agency?s new five-member board must move quickly in 2013 to get up to speed and begin moving vacant properties off the tax rolls and into the hands of tax-paying owners. In the coming months, the Kansas City Land Bank will receive all of the Jackson County Land Trust properties within the city limits ? up to 4,000 pieces of real estate, most of them vacant lots. Unlike Land Trust, the Land Bank has more power to take control of properties and get them into the hands of competent, taxpaying owners. The Land Bank will have significant revenue sources, including proceeds from real estate sales and the first three years of property taxes from new owners. In the future, it may have the power to issue bonds on its own authority. If all goes well, over time the number of nuisance properties should begin to fall and the city?s annual expense for maintaining them ? such as mowing vacant lots ? will drop as well.?I think we have the tools we need,? said David Park, deputy director of the Neighborhoods and Housing Services Department. The estimated number of vacant, nuisance properties has bounced around in recent years. In 2009, officials put the number of vacant houses at about 4,000. Last year, a Federal Reserve estimate was 12,000, which is also the number of turned-off water hookups.Still, some homes may be vacant simply because they?re between tenants. So during the summer, Park said his department sent out inspectors to get a more accurate count. The question was which homes were vacant but also had a code violation, indicating neglect. The total came to around 7,000.Any way you slice it, a number of that magnitude is a major problem, degrading the city?s ability to draw money and people and build up its tax base. The first step in city-building is encouraging the people you have to stay and invest where they are ? always a tough sell in bleak neighborhoods of mostly vacant lots, or areas blighted by decaying houses. Officials must take steps to ensure that Kansas City?s Land Bank avoids the traps of corruption and favoritism that in the past marred the record of some non-profits that strayed from the mission of improving city neighborhoods. Soon after signing the Land Bank bill this summer, Gov. Jay Nixon said the new agency would ?be able to rehab vacant homes and turn deserted buildings into a viable asset for economic development.? By this time in 2013, the Land Bank should be able to report that it has begun moving properties off the tax rolls and into the hands of new owners ? and at a steadily increasing pace.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Apple CEO Tim Cook got $4.2 million in pay for the latest fiscal year, a modest sum compared with last year, when the company's board set him up with stock now worth $510 million for taking the reins in 2011.

Cook's pay for fiscal 2012, which ended in September, consisted of $1.4 million in salary, a bonus of $2.8 million, and $17,000 in company contributions to his 401(k) account and life insurance premiums, according to a filing.

Apple Inc.'s board saw no need to give Cook additional shares in 2012 after the sign-on grant of 1 million shares in 2011. Half of those shares vest in 2016 and the other half in 2021. A lot could happen to the value of the shares before Cook can cash them out, but the sign-on grant made him ?at least on paper? the highest-paid U.S. CEO in 2011.

Cook did vest into shares worth $140 million in 2012. Those shares were granted earlier, when he was chief operating officer. He had been acting CEO for a while before the death of company co-founder Steve Jobs in October of 2011.

Apple tends to grant shares to executives every other year. Cook's closest cohorts got big grants in 2012, including top hardware engineer Robert Mansfield, who got shares worth $83 million. Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer and general counsel Bruce Sewell both got stock grants worth just over $66 million, more than double the value of the grants they got two years ago, reflecting the zooming value of Apple's stock.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based company's compensation policies are relatively simple. Missing are many of the perks that other CEOs command, like country club fees and private use of company aircraft.

We Are Witnessing The Death Of Small Business In America ...

December 25, 2012 ? The Economic Collapse ? closed-for-business

Historically, small businesses have been the primary engine of new job creation in the United States.? If the economy was getting healthy, we would expect to see the number of jobs at new businesses rise.? Instead, we are witnessing just the opposite.? We are told that the economy is supposed to be ?recovering?, but the number of ?startup jobs? at new businesses has fallen?for five years in a row.?

According to an analysis of U.S. Department of Labor data performed?by economist Tim Kane, there were almost 12 startup jobs per 1000 Americans back in the year 2006.? By 2011, that figure had fallen to less than 8 startup jobs per 1000 Americans.? According to Kane, the number of jobs in the United States at businesses that are less than one year old has fallen from 4.1 million in 1994 to?2.5 million?in 2010.? Overall, the number of ?new entrepreneurs and business owners? has fallen by more than 50 percent as a percentage of the population since 1977.? The United States was once known as ?the land of opportunity?, but now that is fundamentally changing.? At this point we truly do have a ?crisis of entrepreneurship? in this country, and that is a huge reason why?America is in decline.? We are witnessing the slow death of the small business in America, and that is incredibly bad news for all of us.

Unfortunately, the problems that small businesses are experiencing right now have been building up for decades.? The economic environment for small businesses in America has become incredibly toxic.? Sadly, we can see this in the numbers.? According to Kane, the following is how the decline in the number of startup jobs per 1000 Americans breaks down?by presidential administration:

Bush Sr.: 11.3

Clinton: 11.2

Bush Jr.: 10.8

Obama: 7.8

Obviously, we are headed very much in the wrong direction.? Kane speculates about why this may be happening?in his paper?

There is anecdotal evidence that the U.S. policy environment has become inadvertently hostile to entrepreneurial employment. At the federal level, high taxes and higher uncertainty about taxes are undoubtedly inhibiting entrepreneurship, but to what degree is unknown. The dominant factor may be new regulations on labor.

Group offers weapons training for Utah teachers

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? More than 200 Utah teachers are expected to pack a convention hall on Thursday for six hours of concealed-weapons training as organizers seek to arm more educators in the aftermath of the Connecticut school shooting.

The Utah Shooting Sports Council said it normally gathers a dozen teachers every year for instruction that's required to legally carry a concealed weapon in public places. The state's leading gun lobby decided to offer teachers the training at no charge to encourage turnout, and it worked.

Organizers who initially capped attendance at 200 were exceeding that number by Wednesday and scrambling to accommodate an overflow crowd.

"Schools are some of the safest places in the world, but I think teachers understand that something has changed ? the sanctity of schools has changed," Clark Aposhian, one of Utah's leading gun instructors, said Wednesday. "Mass shootings may still be rare, but that doesn't help you when the monster comes in."

Gun-rights advocates say teachers can act more quickly than law enforcement in the critical first few minutes to protect children from the kind of shooting that left 20 children and six adults dead Dec. 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. In Arizona, Attorney General Tom Horne has proposed amending state law to allow one educator in each school to carry a gun.

Educators say Utah legislators left them with no choice but to accept some guns in schools. State law forbids schools, districts or college campuses from trying to impose their own gun restrictions.

"We're not suggesting that teachers roam the halls for a monster," said Aposhian, chairman of the Utah Shooting Sports Council. "They should lock down the classroom. But a gun is one more option if the shooter comes in."

A major emphasis of the required safety training is that people facing deadly threats should announce they have a gun and retreat or take cover before trying to shoot, he said.

Utah is among few states that let people carry licensed concealed weapons into public schools without exception, the National Conference of State Legislatures says in a 2012 compendium of state gun laws.

Utah educators say they would ban guns if they could and have no way of knowing how many teachers are armed.

"It's a terrible idea," said Carol Lear, a chief lawyer for the Utah Office of Education, who argues teachers could be overpowered for their guns or misfire or cause an accidental shooting. "It's a horrible, terrible, no-good, rotten idea."

U.S. gun support runs far deeper than politics

BRYAN, Texas (AP) ? Adam Lanza's mother was among the tens of millions of U.S. gun owners. She legally had a .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle and a pair of handguns, which her 20-year-old son used to kill 20 children and six adults in 10 minutes inside a Connecticut school.

In the raw aftermath of the second-worst school shooting in U.S. history, countless gun enthusiasts much like Lanza's mother complicate a gun-owning narrative that critics, sometimes simplistically, put at the feet of a powerful lobby and caricatured zealots. More civilians are armed in the U.S. than anywhere else in the world, with Yemen coming in a distant second, according to the independent Small Arms Survey in Geneva.

Take Blake Smith, a mechanical engineer who lives near Houston and uses an AR-15 style rifle in shooting competitions.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who famously claimed to have shot a coyote while jogging with a pistol holstered to his running shorts, has signed a half-dozen certificates applauding Smith as one of the state's top marksmen. "But I won't call myself a fanatic," said Smith, 54, whose father first let him handle a gun around age 6.

"I sit at a desk all day. And when I get out to the range, I don't hear any gunfire going on," said Smith, who likens his emotional detachment to his guns to the way he would feel about a car or any other machine. "I'm so intent on my sight alignment, my trigger pull, my position. I don't worry about anything. I don't think about anything. It's relieving. It's therapeutic. Everybody has to have their Zen."

Since the school shooting, President Barack Obama has asked for proposals on reducing gun violence that he can take to Congress in January, and he called on the National Rifle Association, the country's most powerful gun-rights organization, to join the effort.

Gun laws in the U.S. vary from state to state ? for instance, as of last month it is now legal to carry a gun in public view in Oklahoma ? and are defended by the firearms industry and the NRA. On Friday, the NRA broke a weeklong silence since the Connecticut massacre by calling for armed volunteers at public schools, prompting criticism from many quarters.

But in the U.S., gun-control advocates are up against a sizeable bloc of mainstream Americans for whom guns are central to their lives, whether for patriotism or personal sense of safety, or simply to occupy their spare time.

Dave Burdett, who owns an outdoors and adventure shop across the street from the sprawling Texas A&M University campus in College Station, says his affinity for guns is rooted in history, not sport.

"It isn't about hunting. Everyone says, 'Well, I can understand having a sporting rifle, but not an AR-15," Burdett said. "But wait a second ? the idea of the Second Amendment was to preserve and protect the rights of individuals to have those guns."

"Remember that the (American) revolution was fought by citizen soldiers," he added. "To this day, that's one of the cornerstones of our military defense. We have an all-volunteer military."

An NRA poster picturing a bald eagle is taped to the glass door of his office. He started as a lawyer, dabbling in everything from commercial land to trying to block the deportation of an illegal immigrant, before seguing into selling guns.

When his daughter graduated with a business degree from Texas A&M, Burdett figured she would move somewhere cosmopolitan like Dallas and work in a downtown high-rise. She instead went to work in the store, built her own AR-15 out of spare parts and used it to join what her father described as the "let's-go-pig-hunting-tonight circuit." Those feral hog hunts often include high-powered rifles as well as night-vision goggles.

"The other thing is, shooting is fun. It really is," Burdett said.

Many think so. Smith, the mechanical engineer, said that includes teenage girls. At national shooting competitions, Smith has run into a group of girls around 13 or 14 years old who call themselves "The Pink Ladies," firing high-powered rifles at targets. He also recalls meeting Australians, whose country bans guns, who told him, "I love to shoot, so I'm going to the U.S."

Others add safety to the list of reasons for allowing people easy access to guns.

"To me it's obvious ? the more people that have guns, or at least in their homes, it's more of a criminal deterrent," said Bill Moos, a local taxidermist in the small town of Bryan, near College Station. Moos, who owns more than 30 guns, can be spotted any given morning, prowling his roughly 40-acre (16-hectare) ranch with his dogs and a shotgun slung over his shoulder.

He tells a story of standing in the post office one day and hearing about a suspect driving around, wanted by the police. He thought of the woman behind the counter near him.

"My first thought was, 'How are you going to protect yourself?' Does she have a gun, in case someone tries to rob her?" he said. "It's the first thing you think of: How are you going to defend yourself?"

On the television in the corner of his workshop, above a stuffed gray fox and a clutch of animal jawbones dangling on a ring like a set of keys, Obama is holding his first press conference since the Connecticut tragedy. He's promising to send Congress legislation tightening gun laws and urging them to reinstate a ban on military-style assault weapons, like the one used by Lanza.

Moos turns down the volume.

"I guess it's something you get used to," he said of guns. "That you grow up around, and you enjoy them, and you accept the fact that you can own. It's a privilege. It's a whole different way of life. I guess I don't need three pick-ups and a Corvette. But I have them."

How To Structure An Online Joint Venture For ... - Name.com

HOW TO STRUCTURE AN ONLINE JOINT VENTURE FOR MAXIMUM BENEFIT

When you are getting started online, one of the first things that you need to build is a customer base. ?Of course, that is difficult to do if you are new and no one knows about you or your products. ?To overcome this you will have to grow your following using SEO, PR and social media.

However, one thing that you can do to jump start the building of your customer base is to leverage the following of someone who has already established themselves in the niche you are entering. ?Many online marketers have participated in?a joint venture?with a marketer who has already developed his?own customer base and seen impressive results.

In a joint venture you are working with another marketer to create and deliver a new product for the marketplace. ?This works well for new marketers when they have an innovative product or service to sell to the niche, but do not necessarily have a solid customer base. Therefore the established marketer is lending her?name, market power and customer database to the project.

When you are looking for potential joint venture partners, a prudent way to make your case to them?is to purchase their product (if possible). ?This will typically give you contact information that the established marketer doesn?t share with non business partners. ?Another factor to keep in mind is that these individuals will have likely received joint venture requests before yours. ?Most of the requests they receive will be hastily crafted emails, which the marketer will find easy to turn down. ?Your approach should be different (consider sending a letter instead of an email) and professional, so that it stands out from the rest.

To create a well run joint venture, the parties typically set up a formal agreement?of some kind once they have decided on the various responsibilities they need to take to bring their product to market. ?When you are first starting, it is typical to accept less than 50% of the profits, as well as doing more than 50% of the work. ?The joint venture benefits you a great deal because not only will you be gaining new customers, but you will also be building your customer database.
