With probe ended, Jay's soccer coach reinstated

The boys soccer coach at Jay High School has been reinstated after being placed on administrative leave during a reopened investigation into the 2003 death of his 2-year-old son.

Daniel Chapa, 36, who also teaches social studies, never was charged with a crime and returned to work Dec. 10.

He was placed on administrative leave in late November after a television news reporter discovered a so-called memoir in which Chapa suggests he drowned his son ? who was terminally ill with a genetic disorder ? to bring the boy relief.

Chapa claimed, through a lawyer, that his writing was a work of fiction, First Assistant District Attorney Cliff Herberg said.

Herberg said his office investigated the matter and has closed the case, citing no evidence that the boy was drowned.

The boy's body was exhumed from Holy Cross Cemetery after the so-called memoir was discovered. His skeleton ? accompanied by a quilt and two plush toys ? had begun to decay.

?The body was in such a state of decomposition that there was no evidence there,? Herberg said. ?There has been no corroborated evidence that we have been able to find.

?It is a very unusual set of circumstances.?

Northside spokesman Pascual Gonzalez said Chapa was allowed to return because there are ?no issues? with him anymore.

?Whenever an issue arises with one of our employees, the standard protocol is to remove the employee from their place of work while we conduct an investigation,? Gonzalez said. ?From there, we proceed with suspension or termination, or they return to their job. In this particular case, he is back at work.?
